Database driven websites means that the website collects information from a database and then displays this information on your webpage. Each time someone visits your website, it will automatically recollect the information in the database, meaning that the information displayed on your website is always up to date. A situation in which this is useful is for example a banking site. Details would constantly change virtually every second.

One of the most common types of dynamic web pages is the database driven type. This means that you have a web page that grabs information from a database (the web page is connected to the database by programming,) and inserts that information into the web page each time it is loaded.

This kind of technology is most commonly used on website where details are going to change very frequently e.g. banking websites. Without database driven websites the details would have to be changed manually, which would be very time consuming, expensive, less effective and basically impossible.
